History: the og purple space twink

For some reason, the history section on his wiki only covers until Episode 8. Thus I am tacking on summary links for Episode 9 and Episode 10, to cover the rest of his appearances in the base canon.

I am also attaching his Villains Wiki entry, because it is honestly a far better overview than the disastrous Gundam Wiki article...

Personality:
- THE FAMILY NAME. I'm starting with weaknesses because being tied down by his family name is Garma's most defining character trait. His life revolves around being a Zabi. His older sister Kycillia spent all their lives drilling into him that he has to behave like a 'man of the Zabi family' – which includes telling an 11 year old Garma to not display emotion when one of his older brother is assassinated in front of his very eyes. Garma would do anything to make his family proud of him. This includes horrifying military operations such as a 'clean up' of a riot (read: killing civilians until they're too scared to resist). Garma wants to prove himself to his sister no matter what. His ability to see his (honestly fuckawful) family critically is very inhibited by this desire. Though Garma was sheltered for most of his early life, he still grew up among his hyper-militaristic siblings and their ideology. He has internalized both of these things thoroughly, and lacks the context to be able to disentangle himself from their fascist ways.
And while Garma longs to distinguish himself independently of his name, being a Zabi has still made him a very prideful individual. Though he works hard, he also does think of himself as inherently somewhat superior to others.
- LONELY. At the same time, being seen as a Zab has turned Garma into a rather lonely person at his core. He may always be surrounded by people, but these people see him as a Zabi heir and nothing else. Garma is aware of this. He knows that his popularity is largely reliant on his birth status and that most of the people who approach him are sycophants who want to use his status for their own advancement. Garma is absolutely starved for affection from people who he thinks don't feel obligated to care about him and he'll go to immense length for these people. This is the spot where he is the most vulnerable to manipulation. We see this with his friend Char – though Garma suspects his manipulations at a few points in canon, he is also always quick to come up with excuses for him because he simply wants to believe that at least Char truly cares about him.
- SHELTERED. Garma's upbringing as the youngest and favourite Zabi child has left him with two core characteristics: he's naive and he's a little spoiled. In the end, Garma's always had the necessities handed to him, and his experience with the world outside his family bubble is very little. It's very easy for people whom he wants affection from to manipulate him into doing their bidding – in the secondary-canon prequel material Char uses this to make Garma start an uprising that is the starting point of the most violent war in human history! Oops!!

And though Garma is now fighting in that very war, he does not have a lot of perspective about the scale and nature of the conflict. For Garma, the war is about personal matters – about doing right by his family, about showing himself capable. He holds no inherent disdain for all people on Earth, as evidenced by taking one of them as his lover. His ideology consists of parroting his siblings, but he has nearly no personal conviction. For Garma, his only emotional stakes are in the world and people right in front of him.

+ DESIRE TO BE LOVED FOR HIS OWN MERIT. I'm listing this as a positive quality as well, because this desire is also the foundation of Garma's drive to better himself and accomplish things. Garma may be spoiled, but he's also a highly motivated person! He wants to be more than 'just' a Zabi heir, he wants to earn all his accomplishments and be judged by them and them only. This makes Garma a very hard worker, well-willing to push himself beyond his limits. Garma can be astoundingly tenacious and courageous.Though he is usually more of a careful commander in the background, he absolutely has his moments of putting himself at risk for a goal. In the face of complete despair when betrayed by his best friend and confronted with his imminent death, Garma accordingly decides to channel his all into a final attack instead of despairing.
+ WELL-MANNERED. Garma is charming and sweet and effortlessly popular. His family name may contribute a lot here, but it's Garma's personality that draws people in. Where his siblings are rough and intimidating soldiers, Garma is a proper gentleman. He's graceful at parties, knows the social rules, and it doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes. Even when he himself is rather frustrated with the way people suck up to him in public, he handles all such matters with impeccable politeness. This makes him the public's sweetheart, the favored Zabi.
+ NOT A HORRIBLE GUY? The bar is low here, but Garma is the most upstanding of the Zabi siblings overall. He may be deeply indoctrinated by his family's values, but he still cares about human life at baseline and has not lost his compassion. In an alternate timeline where he lives (presented in one of the Gundam video games), he does eventually realize that the Zabi family is a bunch of war criminals and starts his own Neo Zeon faction that is dedicated to ending the war and making up for his family's atrocities. Even when he is lacking in ideology, Garma is capable of looking at imminent suffering and understand that there are lines that should not be crossed. It just... takes him a bit.
But even as a fascist army colonel, Garma cares deeply about the well-being of those he loves. There is genuine warmth in his friendship towards Char and his love affair with Icelina. Being so motivated by his personal affections is thus a strength and weakness in one.

Powers/Abilities: Garma has no supernatural abilities, he's just human. He is a trained soldier, so he is proficient with firearms and tactics, as well as capable of piloting his world's various military crafts. He would probably be adept at picking up the piloting of other vehicles as well.

Regret: Garma regrets trusting Char in his last battle, as that decision lead to his death. If Garma could undo his regret, he would like to not listen to Char, survive the battle, and as a result be capable of interrogating and arresting Char for his treason.

Suitability: Garma's military education makes him a natural fit for group missions. Though he's used to a position of command, he has undergone lots of drills as a ground soldier and will be able to fit in with a team when it counts. Further, he has weapons training and is a capable pilot, so if there is ever a vehicle-based mission he could be of use.

Having grown up in a space colony, Garma is naturally adept with space settings and low gravity environments. This may prove advantageous depending on the mission and possibly even in daily life on the ship.

As for his personality... Garma is fiercely dedicated to his family and goals, as well as stubbornly dedicated to proving himself. He is likely to push himself past his limits in order to accomplish missions, gain the respect of the team, and achieve his goals.

Having been raised in the ruling family of his nation, Garma is also adept at blending in with high society. His social grace may thus make him a good fit for infiltration missions.

Inventory: Garma will arrive wearing his Zeon military uniform. I am going to be generous to him and say there is a picture of his fiancée Icelina in the pocket. Otherwise, he gets nothing.
